Changing the Serpentine Belt on KIA Sedona
Changing the Serpentine Belt on KIA Sedona
The Korean automobile company, KIA, introduced the Sedona first in 1999. The car was initially called KIA Carnival but the name was changed to Sedona in the United States and United Kingdom. It used a six-cylinder engine with a 3.5 liter capacity and it was meant to rival the American-made minivans.
The Sedona uses serpentine belts that can be difficult to remove. The space in the two-belt drive system is so small that accessing the belts can be a great challenge. If you would like to change the belt, please follow these steps.
- Make sure that the key is not in the ignition to avoid any risk of the engine getting started as you are still working on the belts.
- Use a lug wrench to loosen the nuts on the front passenger wheel after removing the hubcap. Do not remove the nuts completely, however.
- Open the automobile’s hood and use a floor jack to lift the front quarter of the passenger side. Support the car using a jack stand without removing the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel after removing the nuts.
- Remove the car’s inner wheel well splash shield, which may be held in place using different devices depending on where and when the car was manufactured. You may simply pry off some plastic clips using a screwdriver. Other plastic clips are held by a plastic screw that you will unscrew using a quarter inch. Other retaining devices use metal screws that will require a screwdriver to remove.
- You will see the outer belt tensioner pulley located towards the engine’s lower front section, close to the alternator.
- Use a hand wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley’s center bolt. Find the tension adjuster bolt and turn it in a counterclockwise direction. Do this enough to let the tensioner pulley have some wiggling movement. You may have to remove the belt from the pulleys by loosening the pulley bolt further.
- Find the tensioner pulley of the power steering belt located towards the left, upwards. You may have to take away the inner belt as already explained above.
- Put the new belts in place, beginning with the inner one. Tighten tensioner pulley and adjuster bolts until you can use the hand to twist the belt for only one half turn. Do the same with the outer belt.
- Start the car to determine that the belts are aligned and working properly. Turn off the car and remove the keys.
- Replace the car’s inner wheel well splash guard as well as the retaining clips or screws.
- Put the wheel and nuts back. Tighten the nuts enough to hold the wheel snugly before lowering the Sedona. Then tighten them well before replacing the hubcap.
